Usb Phone Adapter

Oct 13, 2009 in Technology and Gadgets

A usb phone adapter is a device that allows for the direct connection of your phone to the computer so that you may access Skype and other online calls on the regular home telephone. The regular functions of the phone remain the same via the landlines, even if you install the USB phone adapter. A manual or automatic switch is possible for accessing the Internet calling mode, which serves for dialing purposes as well. The phone usage will thus remain the same, no matter whether you receive Internet or land calls.

The functionality of the USB phone adapter does not depend on very complex mechanisms. Without any further equipment, the adapter ads a new mode to the phone. Any standard phone model is compatible with the implementation of a USB phone adapter, and the ringing remains the same whether the call comes via the Internet or by the landlines. The computer powers the USB device, and whether regular or cordless, the phone operation remains unchanged.

There are devices that enable auto-switching for incoming Internet calls or landline calls. The only way to make a difference between the calls is by following the LEDs that go on: there will be one for power, one for the Internet and one for landline calls. Some softwares are normally necessary to make the application possible, but these are included in the package of the USB phone adapter together with the cables and the installation manual. Although almost anyone can use the device, there are some technical requirements to be met nevertheless. It is therefore important to check the technical information before ordering the product on the Internet.

Most usb rj11 phone adapter designs are only compatible with Windows operating systems. Very few can be used on Macintosh or on Linux applications. Then, only 2000, XP and Vista versions of the Windows system work for the USB phone adapter. Anything below this triggers incompatibilities with the adapter and you won’t be able to make it work. There should be at least 128 MB RAM and 15 MB free disk space. Make sure you ask for an expert’s opinion if you are not able to determine the existence of these features on your own. Last but not least, only broadband Internet connections such as DSL or cable are suitable for the installation of an USB phone adapter.
