What is IP Transit connectivity

IP Transit consists of two services, one being the advertisement of customer routes to other ISP’s (Internet service providers) and the other part being advertising routes to other ISPs. Default routes provide a means of the router knowing where to send traffic destined for other networks on the internet. this sometimes does not always happen. Meaning they are sending the traffic from the customer to other networks. IP Transit could be detailed as like so.
There is a number of other technical aspects to transit that you need to ask your self or provider about if you have it or need it. Dual IP stack is a transitional technology for IPv4 to IPv6 using existing protocols in the operating system. One for each of the versions of IP. Some dual-stack IP hosts may run IPv4 and IPv6 totally independently and others may use a hybrid implementation. Running a hybrid system is the most common for both the end user and on servers.
You may need to consider routing protocols and whether your happy for your route to already pre-defined on where to go using one route. this can be because there is only one route out from the network and go through another router owned by some one else first or for cost reasons the internets’ core protocol of the internet is called Border Gateway or BGP this works by using a table of IPs or prefixes can be used for network availability. Autonomous system keeps a collection of the connected IP routing prefixes that is under control of one or more network operaters and so sets a common and defined policy. BGP is a vector protocol that dynamicly updates path informaiton. If a update gets looped through the same node this is detected and discarded and this is used in other protocols to avoid infinity loops.
You also have Peering, this is the voluntry connection of indepenantly owned and run networks for the purpose of exchanging the traffic between the customers on each network. The actual definition is settlement free or “sender keeps all”, meaning the neither of the two networks pay the other for the data that is exchanged between the two networks, which means that reveue must come from their own customer base. So many company’s now inappropriately use the work Peering when they really mean it when payment is involved. So to avoid confusion people may use “settlement free peering” to ensure that there is no ambiguity in what is being described or advertised.
Because the internet is a very large collection of separate networks operating from a common set framework of unique IP addressing and the use of the BGP routing. You find that relationships form between networks and so can be placed in three categories. You pay another network to get access to the internet is called transit. Peer or swap and exchange the traffic for the others customers freely and for a mutual benefit, or finally as a customer where another network pays you to provide them with internet access. For a netowrk to reach other networks on the internet it must sell transit, be a peer with that netowrk, or pay for network transit and continue round that loop until you reach the destination.
